A  Tribute

“Every museum, of whatever size and framework, should form a good relationship with its geographic, cultural and social environment.” As the center of culture and art in Hunan Province, the Hunan Provincial Museum aims at “equal attention to collection and exhibition” and has always dedicated itself to the protection, research and propagation of the outstanding cultural heritage of Hunan Province. Hunan, a land endowed with the finest spirits, has produced not only patriots who dared to be the first but also a succession of greatly gifted artists such as Yi Yuanji “the sacred painter of monkeys and apes” in the distant past and the “people’s artist” Qi Baishi of modern times. Apart from its world-renowned collection of cultural relics from the Han tombs at Mawangdui and its collection of Shang and Zhou bronzes from Hunan, the Hunan Provincial Museum also boasts a large and systematic collection of works by celebrities and artists from Hunan. As the acquisition of cultural relics has become increasingly difficult in recent years, the participation of social forces has played an important role in promoting museum acquisitions. The donations of collectors and artists have played an important function in the development of such non-profit permanent institutions as museums. With contemporary artists as pioneers, the accession of their works can help the preservation of features of different times, and continue to enrich the systems and boundaries of museum collections.

In November, 2010, the “Retrospective Exhibition of Fifty Years of Art” of Hunan’s famous Elaborate Style flower-and-bird painter Zou Chuan’an was held in the Hunan Provincial Museum. Mr. Zou Chuan’an was deeply impressed by the enthusiasm and response of our staff members, the perfect presentation of the exhibition and the huge crowds of visitors. This strengthened his resolution to entrust his works to the Hunan Provincial Museum. After many discussions, he formally donated 799 of his works to the Hunan Provincial Museum in 2013. These include his best Elaborate Style paintings, paintings from life and sketches from different periods and his calligraphic works and free-hand paintings of recent years. On August 28, 2013, “The Donation Ceremony of Mr. Zou Chuan’an’s Works and the Display of his Works” was held in the Rongyuan Hotel in Hunan. The Hunan Provincial Museum, in the process of reconstruction and expansion, overcame various difficulties, completed the detailed registration and accession of all works in less than two months, and prepared a special selection for these works according to their unique features. On the day of the ceremony, leaders, experts and artist in the fields of art, literature and the museums of Hunan province gathered together to express their admiration for the magnanimous act of Mr. Zou. They all realized that the entry of contemporary artworks into a museum collection can enable these works not only to enjoy more professional conservation but also exert a better educational function and bigger social influence.

It remained Mr. Zou Chuan’an’s wish to donate his works to the country. After dedicating his whole life to Elaborate Style flower-and-bird painting, he also expects in his seventies to share his thinking and exploration of the past decades with more colleagues and art-lovers and even future generations in the hope of continuing this tradition. Consequently, although his works entered the international market through overseas agents relatively early, he deliberately withheld his representative works from different periods and donated them all to the Hunan Provincial Museum. Together with his early paintings from life and the majority of his sketches, these works have formed the systematic collection of his works at the Hunan Provincial Museum and become an indispensible part of the “great masters of Hunan” series in the museum’s collection.

The accession of Mr. Zou Chuan’an’s works is a great significance to the enhancement the overall strength of the art collections of the Hunan Provincial Museum, to the preservation of the continuity and development of Chinese Elaborate Style painting, and to the study and demonstration of the creation and innovation of Chinese Elaborate Style painting during specific historical periods. At the same time, it will help push forward the development of museums in Hunan in the hope of ushering in a wave of donations by other artists of Hunan. The Hunan Provincial Museum will also accordingly bring into full play social artistic resources, promote collection, research and demonstration through similar donations, and make an important step in its historical process of creating a museum that is “a leader in China and first-class in the world”.

After one year of collecting, sorting out and studying the materials, we have carefully prepared this Collected Works Donated by Mr. Zou Chuan’an, which apart from including the great majority of his masterpieces, makes public his sketches and such first-hand materials as academic interviews and the artist’s profile. The attention to information and thoughts will also provide researchers with more materials.

This collection serves as a tribute to Mr. Zou Chuan’an!
